Schools in Maldives integrate Fehi Madharusa Framework to foster sustainability education

9 May 2024

As part of the Maldives’ National Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) for 2030 Country initiative, significant strides have been made toward integrating the Fehi Madharusa framework into classroom practices across schools nationwide. This initiative, which embraces a holistic approach spanning transformative school governance, systems, educational programs, and community involvement, marks a pivotal step toward instilling environmental consciousness within the educational fabric of the nation.

The Fehi Madharusa framework has already been piloted in seven schools, with 68 teachers undergoing comprehensive capacity development training to facilitate its implementation. Among these schools, one notable example is the proactive engagement witnessed at the pilot school led by Deputy Principal Dhiyana Ahmed Didi. Together with dedicated teachers and students, Didi spearheads an eco-conscious movement aimed at fostering a cultural shift toward environmental stewardship within the school’s community.

The commitment to eco-friendly practices is palpable, with Didi noting, “We have adopted alternative, eco-friendly practices such as abstaining from balloon use in decorations and phasing out plastic bottles and bags on campus.” Moreover, educators like Didi are embracing hands-on experiential learning to kindle curiosity and inquisitiveness among students. For instance, at the Environmental Club, students are actively involved in developing a hydroponic farming system, and cultivating lettuce in the school’s greenhouse.

A similar dedication is evident at Maafushi School, another pilot institution in Male, where teacher Aishath Asifa highlights the conscious utilisation of resources. “We are more mindful of the resources we use, including water, electricity, and reducing paper consumption,” she explains. Such practices underscore a broader commitment to sustainability within the school environment.

Central to the initiative is the recognition of the pivotal role educators play in shaping students’ understanding of climate change resilience and environmental sustainability. By equipping teachers with the necessary tools and competencies, the project aims to empower them to impart essential values and competencies related to environmental stewardship.

Importantly, the initiative has sparked a profound impact on students, fostering a deep appreciation for local and global sustainability challenges. Deputy Principal Didi emphasises, “Students have become deeply attuned to our environment, actively participating in eco-friendly initiatives and embracing sustainability as a way of life.”

As the Maldives continues to navigate the complexities of sustainable development, the integration of the Fehi Madharusa framework stands as a good guideline for building capacity and nurturing a generation of environmentally conscious citizens poised to tackle the challenges of tomorrow.
