The number of students opting to embark on exchange programmes has been relatively low even before the pandemic. The reality is barriers-to-entry on student mobility is still high and difficult to overcome. Employers still value international expertise in prospective new hires, but how can higher education institutions meet that demand and grow their students’ global competence?

Today’s youth are digital natives. Virtual exchanges may be the way forward, proving to be financially viable and complementary to existing exchange programmes. Students get the opportunity to exchange ideas with peers from around the world and develop global learning.
