As we approach the 2030 deadline for the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), leaders and top officials gathered to review the progress on SDG-4, which aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education for all. The meeting highlighted both achievements and areas requiring urgent attention to meet the set goals.
United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Ms. Amina J. Mohammed, expressed her concerns about the slow progress in achieving SDG-4. “In this era of unprecedented wealth and resources, the lack of progress on SDG-4 is deeply unjust and frustrating. However, this should not be a reason to give up. Instead, it should motivate us to innovate, leapfrog, and embark together on an urgent effort to accelerate progress between now and 2030,” she stated.
The meeting emphasised the critical need for innovative financing mechanisms to sustain long-term educational development. It was noted that ensuring sustainable education financing is paramount to achieving the SDG-4 objectives.
Key recommendations were made across various themes:
- Digital Learning
- Efforts should be intensified to unlock the transformative power of digital learning by focusing on connectivity, competencies, and content.
- Public education support through online and digital mediums should be enhanced by establishing and continuously improving digital learning platforms. These platforms should provide easy access to free, quality-controlled, curriculum-aligned, and pedagogically appropriate educational content.
- Teaching Profession
- Countries need to develop action plans to address teacher shortages and create or strengthen mechanisms for teachers to participate in education policy-making.
- Investments should be made to improve the status and working conditions of teachers, making the teaching profession more attractive.
- Greening Education
- Investment in the capacity building of teachers and educators is crucial. Strengthening governance and financing of education systems to make them crisis-resilient and adaptable to evolving demands is essential.
- The adoption of technical guidance publications on greening education should serve as benchmarks to accelerate actions in areas such as school environments, curricula, teacher training, and community engagement.
- Foundational Learning
- Countries should reform or update early years curricula to align with scientific knowledge of how children learn and develop foundational skills. Planning for high-quality learning materials is crucial.
- The Coalition of Foundational Learning aims to develop joint public goods to make the economic case for foundational learning, understand government costs to scale, and innovate learning assessments to accelerate progress.
The meeting served as a critical platform for reaffirming commitments and strategising on practical steps to overcome the challenges in achieving quality education for all by 2030.
