In a world increasingly reliant on digital connectivity, safeguarding online communities has become a global imperative. Recognising this, TikTok, the popular social media platform, has partnered with UNESCO to mark Safer Internet Day 2024 (SID 2024) with a resounding call to action. Tawfik Jelassi, Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information at UNESCO, emphasises the significance of this collaboration, stating, “Creating an environment where citizens are protected from potential online risks and empowered with the necessary tools and knowledge to navigate the digital landscape fairly has become a global necessity.”
Jelassi’s words underscore UNESCO’s enduring commitment to promoting Media and Information Literacy (MIL) for all, fostering a more informed, ethical, and resilient digital community. This partnership between TikTok and UNESCO exemplifies a concerted effort to address the myriad challenges posed by the online sphere.
Safer Internet Day, celebrated on the second day of the second week of the second month, serves as a poignant reminder of the threats lurking in cyberspace, ranging from invasion of privacy to identity theft, from the spread of misinformation to cyberbullying. Internet users must remain vigilant and informed about these dangers to mitigate their impact. The overarching goal of Safer Internet Day is to empower citizens with the skills to navigate digital technology responsibly, respectfully, critically, and creatively, thereby minimising the associated risks.
Dr. Nikki Soo, Safety and Well-being Lead for Europe at TikTok, underscores the platform’s commitment to promoting a safer online environment. “This Safer Internet Day,” Soo notes, “we’ve launched an educational hub directly on TikTok, where users can access valuable resources and learn about our safety tools.” This initiative aims to equip individuals with the knowledge and resources necessary to protect themselves and others online.
As we navigate the complex terrain of the digital age, partnerships like the one between TikTok and UNESCO serve as a reminder of the various stakeholders involved in ensuring our digital community is safe and secure, even for young ones. SID stresses the importance of collective action, young people, parents, educators, industry, and policymakers coming together to play their part and promote the safe and positive use of digital technology. By fostering collaboration, education, and awareness, we can collectively strive towards a digital future where all users can thrive free from harm.
