The Public Policy Institute of California has published a report examining the future of higher education enrolment in the state of California. The report addresses various trends and projections for the coming years.
In recent years, a nationwide decline in the number of young adults has led to decreased enrolment at many colleges and universities. However, most of California’s higher education institutions have not been significantly affected by this trend. Despite this, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused some people to leave the state, resulting in a simultaneous decline in enrolment figures.
Key findings from the report include:
- Slight increase in enrolment: enrolment in California is expected to increase slightly over the next decade. While the number of young adults in prime college-going ages is declining, this will be offset by rising rates of college attendance
- Higher college participation rates: the increase in college participation will be largely driven by a higher percentage of high school graduates completing the college preparatory courses required for admission to the University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) systems
- Community college challenges: Community colleges are anticipated to face more significant enrolment challenges compared to the state’s four-year colleges and universities.
- Narrowing racial/ethnic gaps: increased college participation among Latinos is expected to help narrow racial and ethnic gaps in college enrolment and completion. By 2035, Latinos are projected to comprise about half of the student population at CSU and community colleges. Asian students will remain the largest group at UC, while white students will continue to be the largest group at private nonprofit colleges.
- Slow growth in college-age population: the population of young adults most likely to attend college is expected to grow very slowly, if at all, over the next couple of decades.
The report provides a comprehensive outlook on the future of higher education in California, highlighting both the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. Check out the full report here.
