Technical and vocational education and training (TVET) students in Malaysia now have clearer educational pathways, thanks to the Malaysian Technical University Network (MTUN) Advanced TVET 2030 initiative. This program aims to better align TVET programmes with industry demands, featuring 23 strategies and 67 key initiatives designed to empower the sector and bolster Malaysia’s global competitiveness.
Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Zambry Abd Kadir stated that the initiative will allow students from technical and vocational schools to pursue their studies up to the PhD level at technical universities. “Now, after completing their education at schools under the National TVET Council, students can continue to community colleges. After finishing college, they can proceed to polytechnics and then, if they choose, apply to MTUN,” stated the Minister.
Basic TVET courses will be offered in schools, with more advanced courses available at technical universities. This initiative is also part of the government’s broader effort to eliminate the perception that TVET is a second-class education option.
The MTUN Advanced TVET 2030 represents a comprehensive educational strategy focused on talent development through technical expertise, soft skills, and entrepreneurship at the tertiary level, in line with the Malaysian Qualifications Framework. Its goal is to cultivate a skilled workforce with high technical and vocational competencies to meet the demands of both local and global job markets.
