China’s Ministry of Education unveils ambitious plan to propel AI education across 184 schools

29 February 2024

China’s Ministry of Education (MOE) recently unveiled a significant initiative aimed at advancing artificial intelligence (AI) education across the nation. A comprehensive list comprising 184 primary and secondary schools has been carefully selected as designated AI education bases, underscoring a strategic push to foster the growth of AI education.

Central to the MOE’s vision is the integration of AI education within existing curricula, necessitating a reliance on information technology, general technology, and related courses within primary and secondary schools. This approach seeks to bolster educational resources and empower educators through targeted training and guidance programs.

In a bid to ensure the effective implementation of AI education, the MOE has pledged to provide robust support and guidance to the designated bases. These institutions are encouraged to serve as trailblazers, spearheading the development of AI-focused curricula, embracing interdisciplinary approaches, and revolutionizing teaching methodologies. Additionally, they are tasked with collaboratively constructing and sharing digital educational resources, nurturing teachers’ digital literacy, and fostering holistic student development.

The momentum towards AI integration in education gained further traction in mid-2023 when provincial education authorities in Guangzhou introduced a dedicated AI course. This course, seamlessly integrated into the annual curriculum plan, offers a comprehensive framework that blends theoretical knowledge with practical applications. Notably, AI instruction is intertwined with information technology and school-based courses, reflecting a holistic approach to education reform.

Similarly, in the province of Zhejiang, strides have been made in incorporating AI content into the academic fabric. Textbooks for sixth-grade primary school students and high school students now feature content elucidating various facets of AI, including its fundamentals, speech recognition technology, speech synthesis technology, and ethical considerations. This proactive approach underscores a concerted effort to equip students with the requisite knowledge and skills to navigate the burgeoning landscape of AI technologies.
